The Tide TableOptions expiration calendar, 2026 and 2027

Monthly OPEX, VIX expiration, quad witching, the ES roll, quarter-end, the Fed and CPI on one calendar, with the monthly options cycle drawn in from the dates. Expirations work like tides: they set the conditions. They don’t steer the ship.

Where the cycle sitsSee the calendar belowAll dates are US Eastern.
    The calendar

The monthly cycle, month by month

Each row is one month of trading days, weekends left out. The shading is one rule applied to every month from the real dates: it starts at the hinge (the earlier of that month’s VIX expiration and its OPEX), stays solid through the Friday of the week after OPEX, then fades to the first trading day of the next month. Letters mark the main dated events.

CPI release dates after December 2026 aren’t published yet; they’ll be added when BLS publishes its schedule, never guessed. FOMC dates are tentative until the Fed confirms each one at the meeting before. On a computer, hover a day for its details. Every date is listed with its source below.

How much of the year is shaded. In 2027, the core week covers 82 of 251 trading days (33%). With the fade it’s 133 (53%). The run-in is everything else. Something is always about to expire, which is why the bands describe conditions, not calls. What the evidence says.

    The dates, with their sources

Grouped by month, US Eastern. Verified means an exchange, agency, index provider or fund sponsor lists the date. Calculated means we worked it out from the published rule and the holiday calendar and haven’t matched it to a published list. Expected means the rule lands on a holiday and the index provider hasn’t set the date yet. VIX dates in more detail, with the rule explained: VIX expiration calendar.

    How the cycle works

    Why expirations move the tide

Most of this way of reading the calendar comes from Cem Karsan (@jam_croissant on X), founder of Kai Volatility Advisors. What follows is our plain-words summary of his framework, not his words. We’re not affiliated with Cem; follow him for the source material.

    The run-in

Investors own a lot of index puts and sell calls against their stock. The dealers on the other side hedge by selling futures. As expiration gets closer, time decay and falling implied volatility shrink those puts, so dealers buy back hedges day after day. Cem calls this stretch the window of strength: dips tend to get bought, and the index tends to pin near big strikes.

    The hinge

The earlier of the month’s VIX expiration and its monthly OPEX. In four-week months that’s VIX expiration, on the Wednesday of OPEX week. In five-week months it’s OPEX itself. Cem treats both as turning points of the cycle: after them, much of the hedging that built into expiration is gone.

    The core week

From the hinge through the Friday of the week after OPEX. The support that built into expiration has rolled off, and the next cycle hasn’t built up yet. Cem calls the stretch after the hinge the window of weakness. It isn’t a forecast of a drop. It’s a stretch with less support underneath, and it can break either way.

    The fade

From the core week to the first trading day of the next month. Cem’s window often runs to about the turn of the month. We draw that tail lighter because the edge of the window is the least certain part of the idea.

The other dates on the calendar

    Quarterly OPEX
March, June, September and December carry more open interest than other months, and the quarterly ES contract expires with them. In Cem’s view the tails fatten in both directions into a quarterly expiration, and conditions are often supportive after it.
    Quarter-end
JPMorgan’s Hedged Equity fund (JHEQX) resets a large S&P 500 options collar on the last business day of each quarter. In Cem’s framework its strikes act like magnets into the reset, and the reset itself is a big supply of volatility.
    FOMC and CPI
Implied volatility tends to be bid into a scheduled event and to drop once it passes. In Cem’s framework that drop feeds the same dealer flows as an expiration, which is his explanation for the relief moves that can follow a Fed decision or a CPI print.
    The ES roll
CME’s roll date is the Monday before the quarterly expiration; after it the next contract is the lead month. It matters for continuous charts and for which contract you’re actually looking at.
    Index events
S&P 500 quarterly rebalances and Russell reconstitutions bring large trades at the close. The S&P rebalance lands on quad-witching day; the Russell reconstitution falls about a week before or after one. They’re here for the flows, not because they’re part of Cem’s cycle.

How an option’s delta changes when implied volatility changes. Falling implied vol shrinks put deltas, so dealers buy back hedges.
    Charm
How an option’s delta changes as time passes. It speeds up close to expiration.
    Vixperation
VIX expiration day. Also spelled vixpiration.

    Cem’s own caveats, and ours

    • A window is a shift in the odds, not a call for a decline. It doesn’t mean the market has to go down.
    • It opens only if the volatility supply allows it. When the flows are different, the picture is different.
    • The giveback can happen in time instead of price. A sideways week counts.
    • Flows everybody knows about get front-run, and that weakens them.
    • Dealer positioning is estimated from models, not observed. Every chart of it rests on assumptions.
    The seasons

    Rough seasons, not dates

Cem also describes a few seasonal tendencies. He gives them no fixed start or end, so they stay off the calendar. The spans below are approximate.

    Summer of George

Cem’s own name for a placid, pinned summer index: heavy volatility supply from structured products and thin volume, while single stocks move a lot underneath. Roughly June into the July or August expirations.

    The fall wobble

In his telling, the pinning loosens after the summer expirations, and the stretch through September OPEX gets choppier. Roughly August into September.

    Year-end strength

Roughly November into January OPEX. In his telling, holidays compress trading time, volatility compresses with them, and the flows support the index.

    Late January and February

Year-end support comes off after January’s VIX expiration and OPEX. Cem counts it among the seasonally weaker stretches of the year.

    The ES trader’s angle

    How I use it

I trade ES, and I use this calendar the way a sailor uses a tide table. It tells me when a known source of support is scheduled to roll off. It doesn’t tell me which way the market goes.

Into an expiration, dealer hedging tends to hold the index in place. On my charts that often looks like balance: overlapping value areas, rotations inside the prior day’s range, breakouts that don’t get follow-through.

After the hinge, some of that support is gone. That’s when I pay closer attention to range extension, and to whether a move outside value actually gets accepted there. Sometimes it does. Plenty of times nothing much happens at all.

This is something I watch for, not a rule I trade. I haven’t tested it with numbers yet, and until I do, it’s an observation, not a claim.

    The evidence

What the research supports, and what it doesn’t

The mechanics are real. The timing claims built on top of them are thinner. Here’s the case both ways.

Well supportedExpiration days have real mechanics

Volume jumps at quarterly expirations (Stoll and Whaley, 1987). Stock closing prices cluster at option strikes on expiration days (Ni, Pearson and Poteshman, 2005). S&P 500 futures get pulled toward at-the-money strikes when their options expire (Golez and Jackwerth, 2012).

ModestThe effects are real but small

For S&P 100 stocks, returns in option-expiration week tend to be high and the week after modestly weaker (Stivers and Sun, 2013). Market-maker hedging usually dampens index volatility, but measured with real market-maker positions the effect is small (Amaya, Garcia-Ares, Pearson and Vasquez, 2025, on same-day SPX options).

    Not shownDirection and timing

We know of no peer-reviewed study showing that the window tells you which way the market goes, or when a selloff starts. Practitioner claims about it rarely publish their method, and the definition of the window varies from source to source.

    33%

of 2027’s trading days fall in a core week (82 of 251). With the fade, 53% (133). If a window covers a third of the year, about a third of all big moves will start inside it by chance alone. The ones that did are easy to remember. That’s why the base rate is here.

Statistics shown are computed from historical market data and describe the past. Hypothetical or historical results have inherent limitations. They do not represent actual trading, are prepared with the benefit of hindsight, and do not reflect real conditions such as slippage, fees, and liquidity. No representation is made that any account will or is likely to achieve similar results. Sample sizes are shown because small samples mislead.

    Questions

    The options calendar, quickly

    What is OPEX?

Standard monthly options expiration: the third Friday of the month, moved to the business day before when that Friday is a market holiday. SPX AM-settled options stop trading the day before and settle to that morning’s opening prices; SPY and PM-settled SPX options expire at the close on expiration day.

When is quad witching in 2027?

March 19, June 17 (a Thursday, because June 18 is a market holiday), September 17 and December 17. Stock, ETF and index options expire with the quarterly ES future on those days.

When is the ES roll in 2027?

CME’s roll date is the Monday before the quarterly expiration: March 15, June 14, September 13 and December 13.

What is the window of weakness?

Cem Karsan’s name for the stretch after an options expiration hinge, when the dealer hedging that built into expiration has rolled off. On this calendar it’s the core week plus the fade. It’s a period with less support, not a forecast.

    Is this a trading signal?

No. The dates are facts, and the shading is one rule applied to them. The window covers about half of 2027’s trading days, and markets move in every part of the cycle. Nothing here tells you to buy or sell.

    What about daily (0DTE) expirations?

SPX options now expire every business day. They aren’t drawn here; this calendar follows the monthly cycle.

How do I add it to my calendar?

Use Subscribe at the top of the page. The feed carries every dated event (not the shading), and a subscription updates itself when a date changes; a download is a one-time copy. VIX dates only? The VIX calendar has its own feed.

Trading futures involves substantial risk of loss and is not suitable for everyone. Everything we publish is education and information, not investment advice or a recommendation. Past performance, real or simulated, does not indicate future results.

No date or band on this page is a signal to buy or sell.
